Week 1: Eisen, journalist and history buff

Our first Hello From Singapore curator is Eisen, a journalist, history buff, and storyteller. He will take charge of the account from 1st July to 7th July.

Here is Eisen, in his own words:

Hello! My name is Eisen Teo. I’m 27 and I live in Serangoon, a region in northeast Singapore. I work as a journalist with The Straits Times, an English-language daily broadsheet newspaper. I work with the Schools team, which puts out two newspapers for primary and secondary schools, IN and Little Red Dot, every Monday and Tuesday. I cover the youth and education beat.

My first love, however, is History. I am passionate about the history of Singapore and Malaysia, 20th-century military history, the history of decolonisation, and how communities remember and commemorate events. History is not exactly the most sexy subject in Singapore, especially in our schools, so one of my life aims is to change that, and put the “story” back into History. I could start with my name - “Eisen” was adapted from Dwight D Eisenhower, a five-star general in the United States Army during World War II and the 34th President of the US. Or I could start from the tattoos on my arms, which are verses from French history. I could start anywhere!

Other than following @hellofrmsg and of course telling everyone you know about it, you can follow my personal account @eisen and “like” my Facebook page, www.facebook.com/EisenTeo, which is dedicated to my love for History and ahem, myself, of course. I’m really excited to be the first curator for @hellofrmsg and I’m looking forward to showing you around Singapore!
